Delivery Method

The Assistant Principal Programme will be delivered over two days from 9:30am - 4:30pm each day, with a number of short breaks throughout the day.  It will be facilitated by a subject matter expert and is offered both in person and online as outlined.  In person training will take place at the Institute of Public Administration, Ballsbridge, Dublin D04 TC62,

Please note that as this is an interactive programme of training with an emphasis on engagement and skill building, we limit the size of the group.  If you wish to book places for a number of staff from a single organisation, we recommend that you contact training@ipa.ie in the first instance, as a tailored programme may be more suitable.

Participants of this programme will typically be newly appointed to the Assistant Principal (AP) role or have been working in the role for less than 5 years.

Fee: The cost of this two-day course is €1,010 per person.

Individuals who are paying for themselves must pay in full by credit card at the time of booking.

Cancellation Policy: Please note, that in the event of a cancellation less than 48 working hours before the commencement of a course, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged.  Cancellation fee will also apply to non-arrivals on the day.

Who is this for?

This programme is for Assistant Principal Officers (APOs) and equivalent grades in the Civil Service and State  Agencies. 

Participants of the programme will typically be newly appointed to the Assistant Principal (AP) role or have been working in the role for less than 5 years.

Learning Outcomes

The Assistant Principal programme will support APs to achieve their leadership and people management responsibilities and potential by understanding and focusing on:

  • Their role as AP within the context of their individual institutions and the wider public sector change, performance and innovation agenda
  • The impact of their leadership style on others and their approach to delivering results
  • The behaviours and practices necessary to lead, develop and manage others effectively
  • Relevant employee engagement strategies that deliver strategic objectives and results
  • The dynamics of change, why people resist change and how best to lead and deliver change
  • Enhanced individual resilience to follow through on expectations and commitments to manage high performing teams
  • Take a proactive approach to own and further competency development
