The overall aim of the Certified Mediation Training Programme is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Mediation as well as expertise in mediation skills for the management of workplace and organisational conflicts and disputes. 

For those wishing to practice as professional mediators, this 60 hour programme is accredited by the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII) and leads to ‘Member‘ status of the MII.  On successful completion of this training programme, which includes the follow on ‘Assessment Day', successful candidates are eligible to register at ‘Member’ level of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland.

Delivery Method

The Certified Mediation Training programme is facilitated over seven days in three modules, over a two to three month period. It is highly participative and practical.  Learning approaches include short lecture inputs and facilitated group discussion.  Much of the learning happens from insights derived from 'working-through' case studies/role plays as well as from on-going feedback during these sessions.   The number of participants admitted to each training programme is limited in order to optimise the practical nature and learning opportunities of this programme.

It is intended that all modules of this programme will take place on-site at the IPA Premises in Ballsbridge, Dublin D04 TC62.

Fee: The fee is €2,850 per person (2024).  Fee includes Programme documentation, tuition, lunch and refreshments on tutorial dates and MII Assessment. 

Individuals who are paying for themselves must pay in full by credit card at the time of booking.

Organisations will receive an invoice for this course in advance of the start date and payment is required prior to commencing the course.

All IPA courses are subject to minimum participant numbers and bookings will typically close one week prior to the course start date.

Cancellation Policy: Please note, that in the event of a cancellation less than 48 working hours before the commencement of a course, a 15% cancellation fee will be charged.  Cancellation fee will also apply to non-arrivals on the day.

  • Those who want to become accredited Professional Mediators;
  • Those who wish to use mediation skills in their area of work or profession;
  • Managers, HR practitioners, team leaders, consultants, advisers and others who negotiate and deal with conflict and dispute resolution;
  • Officials and non full-time Trade Union representatives;
  • Anybody - at any level - with responsibility for resolving workplace disputes and conflict who wishes to enhance their skills in this area.
Learning Outcomes

On completion of this training programme, students will have an understanding of:

  • mediation as a mechanism for dispute resolution and its appropriate use;
  • the five step framework for mediation and how to manage the mediation process;
  • the role of the Mediator;
  • the types and causes of conflict;
  • their own personal skills development needs in relation to working as a Mediator;
  • why mediation, as a process, is rapidly developing in various facets of Irish society and business.

By the end of the programme, students will have developed appropriate mediation related skills through practice, reflection and feedback.  They will also be prepared to progress towards MII Assessment.

Course Content

The Certified Mediation Training programme is seven days delivered in three modules over a two-to-three-month period.

On completion of the programme students will have developed appropriate mediation related skills through practice, reflection and feedback.  

The content areas will include:

  • Mediation as a mechanism for dispute resolution and its appropriate use;
  • The five-step framework for mediation and how to manage the mediation process;
  • The role of the Mediator;
  • The types and causes of conflict;
  • Participants’ own personal skills development needs in relation to working as a Mediator;
  • Why mediation, as a process, is rapidly developing in various facets of Irish society and business.
Assessment

Students are required to complete an agreed mediation related project prior to the final module. Evaluation happens via ongoing assessment throughout the programme as well as satisfactory completion and presentation of the mediation related project.  Attendance at all seven days / three modules is a requirement for certification.

In addition to the module dates, there is also an Assessment Day following the completion of all modules. Successful candidates are then eligible to register at 'Member' level of the MII. Participants will be advised of Assessment Day dates during Module One of the Programme.

Membership/Professional Accreditation:

Completion of this 60 hour training programme entitles participants to apply for 'Affiliate Member' level of the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII).  

Those who aspire to practice as professional mediators at 'Member' level may do so by undertaking a further and separate 'Assessment Day'.  This is an assessment of mediation skills through videoed role play and written self assessment reflective piece, which is assessed by an MII approved Assesor.  (The IPA runs a number of these 'Assessment Days' in the weeks following each completed Programme). Course Leader

The course is facilitated by three experienced Mediators / Facilitators from the Institute's Human Resource Management Training and Consultancy Unit.
